Pool Deck Resurfacing in League City, TX

League City Pool Resurfacing does pool deck resurfacing in League City, Texas: a new coating or thin overlay bonded to the concrete around a pool, once its cracks, joints and loose patches have been dealt with. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which League City's code adopts, requires pool decks, coping and step surfaces to be slip resistant and cleanable.

Pool deck resurfacing options: overlays, cement resurfacers and coatings

Acrylic decorative overlays

SUNDEK describes its product as an acrylic decorative concrete coating for old or new concrete, about as thick as two quarters stacked on top of each other, and says it can also feather out uneven areas up to 2 inches deep. Factory-trained installers put it down in 4 to 8 layers, the count set by the surface and the pattern chosen.

Cement resurfacers

A cement resurfacer is thinner work for worn or scaled concrete. QUIKRETE's Re-Cap, a polymer-modified portland cement product, goes on from a feather edge of 1/16 inch up to 1/2 inch with a squeegee, trowel or brush, in sections of no more than about 144 square feet that break at the control and expansion joints, and those joints stay open.

Roll-on and polymer deck coatings

Tuff Coat's water-based non-skid coating cross-links urethanes, acrylics and co-polymers with recycled rubber granules and dries 30 to 35 mils thick, and the maker says two coats are required for best results. Mortex's Systex is a three-step polymer system for new or existing pool decks that it says resists oil and grease stains better than plain concrete and stands up to high heat.

Spray deck, cool deck, stone and pavers

Two deck systems have pages of their own: spray deck and cool deck coatings, for Mortex's Kool Deck and sprayed knockdown textures, and travertine and paver pool decks, for replacing the surface with stone or concrete pavers. A Houston builder won't price that replacement by the foot until it knows what sits under the current deck. League City Pool Resurfacing gives free estimates on each of them.

Pool deck prep before resurfacing: cleaning, cracks and joints

Getting down to bare concrete

Every system above wants clean concrete. SUNDEK's specification starts with a high-pressure power wash and the removal of dirt, grease, oil and curing compounds, and warns that old coatings may need mechanical removal before the new one will bond. QUIKRETE calls a 2500 PSI wash essential to the bond and rules out painted or sealed surfaces, and SUNDEK won't go over paint either.

Cracks that can come back

SUNDEK fills most cracks with urethane and leaves hairline and shrinkage cracks alone. Treated cracks may come back, it says, usually as a hairline largely hidden in the texture, and one option it offers is grinding the cracks open into a planned scoreline pattern. QUIKRETE puts it plainly: reflective cracking can't be completely prevented, especially where a slab lacks control joints or settles. Spalled edges and broken slabs go to pool deck repair before any resurfacing.

Control joints and expansion joints

SUNDEK keeps every existing control joint open so the concrete can still expand and contract, and replaces worn-out expansion joints. W. R. Meadows makes DECK-O-SEAL, a two-part polysulfide sealant for pool deck joints that stretches or compresses up to 25 percent once cured; its data sheet asks for a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio, 1/4 to 1/2 inch of sealant and concrete cured for 28 days.

Sunken or rocking slabs

A coating can't raise a slab that has dropped. Prime Resins, a maker of slab-lifting foam, injects structural polyurethane foam into the voids beneath settling or rocking slabs to lift them back without digging out the deck, and in one pool deck case study it blamed tree roots and poor drainage that washed out the soil. That is pool deck leveling, done before any new surface goes on.

Deck slope, drainage and slip resistance in a pool deck resurfacing

Slope and standing water

The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code sets minimum drainage slopes of 1/8 inch per foot for textured, hand-finished concrete and 1/4 inch per foot for exposed aggregate, and caps a non-wood deck at 1/2 inch per foot. Under its coating SUNDEK wants a fall of no less than 1/4 inch per linear foot, and its specification is clear that the coating itself won't correct poor drainage. Tell the installer about a low spot ahead of time, its FAQ says, and the puddle can sometimes be shifted elsewhere, or spread to double the width at half the depth so it dries in the sun sooner.

Slip resistance

Sider-Crete recommends a knockdown texture for the most slip resistance and says its system isn't presented as slip-proof. W. R. Meadows puts a slip-resistant additive in DECK-O-GRIP, its clear acrylic cure-and-seal for concrete and tile pool decks, and lists static friction figures under ASTM C 1028 of at least .90 dry and .85 wet.

Where the deck meets other concrete

The code asks for a joint wherever a deck meets existing concrete work, so movement between the two can't damage the pool, and for deck edges that are radiused or tapered with no sharp corners. It also limits the gap to an adjoining walkway, joint material included, to 3/4 inch. A sealer over the finished surface is pool deck sealing, a job of its own, and League City Pool Resurfacing will talk through slope, joints and sealing at the estimate.

Pool deck resurfacing on League City clay and in Gulf Coast rain

Clay that moves under the slab

Kemah silt loam, which NRCS maps under City Hall, Heritage Park and Ralph Parr Elementary, has a clay subsoil from 38 to 97 cm down with a linear extensibility of 9.8, a measure of how much the clay swells and shrinks, and the highest reading of the League City points checked. The USDA's 1988 Galveston County survey names high shrink-swell potential among the main limits of both Kemah and Bernard soils for most urban uses. A Houston builder's advice fits that ground: hairline cracks and surface spalling are overlay work, cracks that keep moving with the clay mean replacing those sections, and the quote should be itemized area by area.

Rain and the work window

NOAA's weather station in League City records a normal 60.20 inches of rain a year (1991–2020), with February (3.02 inches) and March (3.30) the driest months and September (7.34) the wettest. SUNDEK's specification rules out exterior work in wet weather, and QUIKRETE wants air and concrete between 50°F and 90°F and its resurfacer kept out of rain for at least 8 hours.

Permits and HOA rules for deck work

New or replacement paving is on League City's permit list, and a Building Department handout on patios says new concrete needs a permit even where the structure over it doesn't. No City page says whether a coating over an existing deck does, so ask the Building Department before work starts. HOA rules differ by community; Brittany Lakes' published guidelines, for one, cap pool decking at 12 inches above natural grade.

Pool deck resurfacing questions

What is the average cost of resurfacing a pool deck?

Typical Houston-area prices in 2026 put a spray texture or cool-deck style coating at around $4 per square foot plus any prep, about $3,200 before prep on a typical 800-square-foot deck, and a stamped or decorative overlay at around $8.50 per square foot plus prep. National averages for 2025 run $3 to $12 per square foot, or $1,500 to $10,800 for a 500 to 900 square foot deck, depending on its size, the design and any repairs. They are published figures rather than prices from League City Pool Resurfacing, whose estimates are free.

What is the best material to use for resurfacing a pool deck?

The one that suits what is under it. Sound, bare concrete can take an acrylic overlay, a cement resurfacer or a textured coating. A painted deck has to be stripped first, since neither SUNDEK nor QUIKRETE puts its product over paint, and Mortex's bonder grips only solid concrete, not brick, tile or natural stone. For grip, Sider-Crete recommends a knockdown texture.

Can a concrete pool deck be resurfaced?

Yes, if the slab is sound. Mortex wants clean, sound concrete, preferably at least 28 days old, with major cracks and structural damage repaired well before the topping goes on, and QUIKRETE says damaged concrete must be repaired before resurfacing starts. QUIKRETE also warns that old cracks can reappear when the base concrete moves.

Is painting a pool deck a good idea?

Paint makes later resurfacing harder. SUNDEK's coating can't go over painted concrete, QUIKRETE's resurfacer goes only on bare concrete, and Tuff Coat says old paint in poor condition must come off before its coating, while paint in good condition is sanded and primed. On a cool deck, Mortex says its own Systex Deck Paint gives no cooling, and the painted area turns hotter and slicker.

How soon can you walk on a resurfaced pool deck?

It depends on the product. SUNDEK keeps foot traffic and moisture off its texture for 24 hours and vehicles off for 72. With Sider-Crete's system, the sealer needs 24 hours before anyone walks on it lightly, the deck sees only light use for two days, and furniture and hard-soled shoes stay off for a week or more. QUIKRETE's resurfacer takes foot traffic after 8 hours and is moist-cured for 24 to 48 hours before use.
