Spray Deck and Cool Deck Coatings in League City, TX

League City Pool Resurfacing installs and recoats spray deck and cool deck coatings in League City, Texas: thin, textured toppings over pool deck concrete, either Mortex's Kool Deck, splashed on and troweled, or a sprayed knockdown texture finished with an acrylic coat or sealer. Mortex dates Keystone Kool Deck to 1962, and its product page claims the topping significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete.

Free estimates come by phone or through the form, and the first questions are which system the deck has now, the color you want, and when the weather allows the work.

Spray deck and cool deck: two different pool deck coatings

Kool Deck, splashed and troweled

Kool Deck is a Mortex trademark. Mortex mixes classic Keystone Kool Deck on site, in a paddle mixer: a Kool Deck unit goes in with 94 pounds of white cement, 10 gallons of size-20 mesh marble sand and 8 gallons of water, and that batch covers roughly 300 square feet. It is thrown on from a dash brush in two splashes, never from a hopper gun, to a total of 1/8 inch, and a flat, light first trowel pass sets the pattern. Mortex wants that pattern roughly 40 percent smooth and 60 percent void, because the knolls can then move into the voids as they expand and contract, which keeps craze cracks from forming.

Its newer Kool Deck Elite comes as a 50-pound pre-mixed bag that covers about 65 square feet, with what Mortex calls an enhanced formula against modern chemical attack and craze cracking.

Sprayed knockdown textures

A knockdown texture is sprayed on, then flattened. SUNDEK's Classic Texture is an acrylic, water-based spray texture knocked down with a trowel's edge and finished with two sprayed acrylic coats, and SUNDEK calls it its most popular product for pool decks. Sider-Crete's Sider-Deck, a polymer-modified cement coating, comes out of a hand-held hopper gun and is flattened with a stainless steel trowel; the knockdown covers 70 to 80 percent of the concrete, and an acrylic sealer enhanced with silicone gives the finished color.

Which one is spray deck?

No maker's product page we read uses the name. Contractors use 'spray deck' as another name for cool deck or a knockdown texture, and 'cool deck' itself often stands for any light, textured deck coating, so an estimate should name the maker and the product. League City Pool Resurfacing will talk through both at the estimate.

  • Kool Deck 1/8 in. total (Mortex)
  • About 300 sq ft per Kool Deck unit (Mortex)
  • Knockdown covers 70–80% (Sider-Crete)

How a cool deck or spray deck coating is applied

Etching and bonding the old concrete

Mortex's instructions for existing concrete start by removing old toppings, then washing the deck with muriatic acid and water, 1 part acid to 1 part water on older concrete, never on dry concrete; acid that fails to boil and bubble means the deck still isn't clean. After at least an hour of keeping the deck wet, PTA Bonding Agent, a cement-based bonder colored gray so coverage is easy to check, is broomed on so thin that the base concrete still shows through. The topping goes on before the bonder can dry. Major cracks and structural damage are repaired well ahead of the topping, Mortex says, which is pool deck repair work.

The makers split on one step. Sider-Crete recommends a neutralizing treatment such as TSP after an acid etch, but Mortex warns that TSP leaves a film that breaks the bond between deck and topping. The maker of the product going down is the one to follow.

Two days under plastic

Right after troweling, every section is covered with clear 2-mil polyethylene, held down with sand, and left exactly two days. White growths that show when the plastic comes off are washed away, and the deck is washed often for the next 28 days. A mix that's too thick, Mortex warns, covers less, patterns poorly, sets faster and craze-cracks more.

Spraying, knocking down and sealing

SUNDEK's specification runs in this order: primer; a blending base coat of 1/8 inch or more; a stipple coat from a smaller spray tip; a splatter coat flattened with a flexible pool trowel; caulking at joints and repairs; and two finish coats, rolled or sprayed airless, each left to dry completely. Sider-Crete lays a thin plastic tarp on the pool water, taped at the edges, so nothing falls in, and seals its texture 24 to 48 hours after spraying, three days at most, in two thin coats at least 2 to 4 hours apart, the second at right angles to the first.

Cool deck and spray deck work in League City heat

Temperature limits on the day

Mortex wants the air at 50 degrees and rising and no hotter than 90 for Keystone Kool Deck, or 95 for Kool Deck Elite, urges extreme care when temperatures are expected to pass 95°F, and says not to apply if rain or frost is forecast. Sider-Crete's floor is 45°F for air and surface, and it rules out overheated or very dry concrete and high winds, warning that hot concrete can make the material set too quickly.

League City's hot months

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for its station in League City average 14.3 days at 90°F or above in June, 23.0 in July, 22.9 in August and 11.3 in September, against 2.5 in May and 1.5 in October, and the normal August high is 92.3°F. Those are the months to plan a deck coating around.

Heat underfoot and color

Mortex publishes no degree figure for how much cooler Kool Deck stays. Its darker Designer Colors are warmer than the standard shades, it says, yet still more comfortable than plain concrete through the summer. SUNDEK says its surface stays cooler than gray concrete, exposed aggregate, pavers, tile and even epoxy, adds that any surface absorbs heat on a hot day, and recommends a light color for a pool in full sun.

Cool deck repair, recoating and care

Patching small spots

For small damaged areas Mortex sells a Kool Deck Repair Kit with bonder and texture for about 6 square feet, in the Kool Deck colors. The patch area has to be free of loose and deteriorated concrete. It is soaked, etched with 1:1 muriatic acid kept inside the patch, given a thin coat of PTA, splashed and troweled until its flats match the deck around it, and kept under sand-weighted plastic for exactly two days; frequent washing over the next 6 weeks, Mortex says, greatly improves its strength.

Recoating a worn cool deck

A recoat goes onto clean, sound concrete. Mortex takes off deteriorated concrete and old toppings with a scarifier and then a power washer, notes that a 3000 psi washer can strip paints, plastic coatings and polymer toppings, and makes minor repairs to edges, depressions and holes just before the new topping. SUNDEK and Mortex don't agree about old concrete. SUNDEK's FAQ says Kool Deck forms a mechanical bond on freshly poured concrete, within its first five hours, whereas Mortex prints a full procedure for existing concrete using its PTA bonder. Acrylic overlays and other systems are on the pool deck resurfacing page.

Cleaning, salt water and water repellent

Mortex's care sheet calls for strong soap, water and a nylon bristle broom, frequent rinsing where a salt-water chlorinator runs, and an immediate rinse for spilled acid or chlorine. Gray mineral deposits at steps and busy spots come from evaporating water; removing them is for experienced contractors, it says, and owners shouldn't attempt muriatic acid washes. Its Protect-A-Deck water repellent bridges hairline cracks, goes on surfaces at least 28 days old, and needs three rain-free days to cure.

Community and HOA pool decks

League City's own Hometown Heroes pool, a 400,000-gallon City pool, had several deck sections replaced and the whole deck recoated in its 2025 renovation, alongside new plaster and refinished splash pad features. Shared pools have their own scheduling and rules, covered under HOA and community pool resurfacing.

Spray deck and cool deck questions

Can a cool deck be repaired?

Yes. Small damaged spots can be patched with Mortex's repair kit and troweled to match the texture around them, and before a recoat Mortex fills damaged edges, depressions and holes with the topping mix. Loose or hollow topping has to come off back to sound material first, and cracks or damage in the slab itself are repaired well before any new topping goes on.

How much does it cost to resurface a cool deck?

Typical Houston-area figures for 2026 start a spray texture or cool-deck style coating around $4 per square foot, plus prep; on a typical 800-square-foot deck that is a starting point near $3,200 before prep. National averages for 2025 put a coat of Kool Deck at about $4 to $6 per square foot. Prep, crack repair and stripping an old topping are what move the number. These are published figures, not prices from League City Pool Resurfacing, and a look at the deck is free.

How long does cool pool deck coating last?

No maker we read gives a recoat interval or a service life in years for Kool Deck, SUNDEK, Sider-Deck or Tuff Coat. Mortex lists 5 to 10 years of water repellency for its Protect-A-Deck, but that is the sealer's figure, not the deck's. The nearest local planning number is South Shore Harbour's 2021 reserve study, which plans a new textured coating, with repairs, for its 6,800-square-foot community pool deck every 8 to 12 years.

Can cool deck go over pavers, tile or stone?

Not Mortex's. Its PTA bonding system adheres only to solid concrete, and Mortex doesn't recommend its topping on brick, wood, tile, natural stone, clay or any other surface that isn't cementitious. SUNDEK's coating also needs concrete free of paint. A stone or paver deck is a different job.

Is a cool deck slippery when wet?

Sider-Crete says plainly that its own system isn't presented as slip-proof, and that a knockdown texture gives the most grip. No slip-test number for Kool Deck turned up on the Mortex pages we read. Paint changes the surface: Mortex says its own deck paint makes Kool Deck hotter and slicker. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, adopted by League City, requires deck surfaces to be slip resistant.
