Quartz Pool Finishes in League City, TX
League City Pool Resurfacing applies quartz pool finishes in League City, Texas: white cement plaster carrying natural or color-coated quartz aggregate, in lines such as SGM's Diamond Brite, NPT's QuartzScapes and CL Industries' Krystalkrete. The National Plasterers Council calls quartz one of nature's hardest minerals, non-reactive to pool chemicals, and rates a quartz finish a 10 to 15 year surface.

What a quartz pool finish is made of
Quartz against marble plaster
Unlike the marble in standard plaster, quartz aggregate is completely insoluble even in highly corrosive acid, SGM says, and polymer-modifying the cement adds hardness, improves bonding and cuts water penetration. SGM brought out Diamond Brite in the early 1990s, after a late-1980s run of spot etching and other plaster failures it describes as epidemic nationwide. The National Plasterers Council's caution is that aggregate finishes are pricier than standard plaster and aren't immune to surface problems when water chemistry goes to extremes.
Quartz product lines
SGM blends quartz aggregate, its insoluble coated Diamond Quartz and polymer-modified cement in Diamond Brite, made in Pompano Beach and Plant City, Florida, and in Dallas, and checks every batch of about 60 to 80 bags before it ships. NPT says natural quartz is ten times harder than marble, which suits its QuartzScapes to commercial and residential pools, in 18 colors, and sells ColorScapes, a blend of colored quartz, white marble, white cement and its Lobo modifier, as the more affordable choice. Wet Edge Technologies calls its Luna Quartz an entry-level finish that may show trowel marks and color shading, and Pebble Technology International makes a silica-based PebbleQuartz.
Between plaster and pebble
In the Council's surface ratings quartz sits between white plaster at 5 to 8 years and pebble pool finishes at 12 to 18. SGM, comparing its own quartz with a pebble finish, says pebble's texture hides minor staining better, while smoother, lighter quartz shows mineral staining and mottling sooner. The guide pool finishes compared sets plaster, quartz, pebble and glass tile side by side, and League City Pool Resurfacing gives free estimates on each.

Quartz pool finish colors and how the water looks
Picking a color
CL Industries calls the finish's background dye the single greatest factor in water color: a white, blue, black or gray finish makes the water read blue, while green, brown or tan push it toward green. The more direct the sun, the lighter the water looks, it adds, and NPT says shade from tall trees or buildings darkens it, with the shallow end looking lighter than the deep water.
Shade variation and mottling
SGM says every pool plaster is subject to shade variation, mottling, scale and efflorescence, colored ones especially, and that Diamond Brite is no exception. Its natural ingredients vary from batch to batch, so installers record batch numbers and blend batches in each mix, and SGM voids warranties submitted without valid batch numbers. Some light mottling as it cures tends to even out within the first six months, SGM says; streaks, dark blotches or a chalky film that persist usually point to water chemistry during the start-up. Above the waterline the finish looks drier, may check-crack and develops a waterline ring, because it isn't impervious to water.

How a quartz pool finish is applied
Preparing the old surface
Over an existing finish, SGM's warranty terms require its Bond Kote bonding system and won't cover its finishes over any other bonding material; where the old finish is sandblasted or chipped off first, Bond Kote may not be needed. The same choice between a bond coat and a chip-out comes up in pool replastering, and League City Pool Resurfacing will talk through which route your pool needs.
Mixing and troweling
SGM's coverage figure is about 22 to 25 square feet per 80 lb. bag of Diamond Brite at a 3/8-inch minimum, and it tells installers to order 5 to 10 percent more bags, because areas plastered later from another delivery can't be matched. It is mixed for at least 5 and no more than 10 minutes: too short a mix sets unevenly and varies in shade, too long a mix weakens the plaster. SGM favors slick troweling, which brings the cement paste up and takes it off, and has the spike holes from the finishers' shoes filled with aggregate so they don't show.
Exposing the quartz
SGM's manual calls for one worker for every 300 square feet and gives an exposure window of about an hour. When standard Diamond Brite has lost its sheen, finishers wearing white cotton socks or foam shoes wash the paste away with soft brushes and water; the Diamond Brite Quartz Series is exposed by acid washing instead. CL Industries applies its Krystalkrete above 40°F and, once it has hardened, usually after several hours, takes the cement film off with a dilute muriatic acid solution and scrubbing, laying sodium bicarbonate around the bowl to keep that area from over-exposing.
Working in Gulf Coast heat
SGM's temperature window runs from above 50°F to below 100°F, for materials and work areas alike, starting 24 hours ahead of placement and lasting until 72 hours afterward. Set time shifts with temperature and humidity, its manual adds, so the plaster is watched constantly while it sets and the walls are troweled from the shady side toward the sunny side. League City's NOAA station logs 75.8 days a year at 90°F or more on average, though only 1.0 at 100°F or more.

Quartz finish start-up and care on League City water
SGM's start-up for Diamond Brite
For Diamond Brite's first fill, SGM calls for a sequestering agent, pH of 7.2 to 7.6 and total alkalinity of 80 to 120 ppm, with calcium hardness no lower than 125 ppm for three days and 200 to 400 ppm after that. Day two gets no chlorine; brushing of the whole pool runs twice daily through day three, then once a day to the two-week mark, wheeled vacuums stay out for 14 days, and automatic cleaners and salt for 28. SGM's online maintenance guide gives a different brushing schedule from its product sheet, so ask which one applies to your finish. The guide to new pool plaster start-up covers the first month in more depth.
Fill water and long-term balance
The City's 2025 water report prints minerals for just one supply, the water entering from the City of Houston's Southeast plant: total hardness of 124 mg/L as calcium carbonate and pH 8.1. It gives none for the Gulf Coast Water Authority water. SGM warns that the water mixed into the plaster matters as well: well water or water high in metals discolors Diamond Brite, and hard or high-alkalinity water makes it effloresce and scale, with the worst of it in darker shades, Midnight Blue, Onyx, Tahoe Blue and French Gray among them. Past day 28, SGM's warranty terms set the saturation index at 0.0 to +0.3, with pH at 7.4 to 7.6, calcium hardness at 200 to 400 ppm, alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm, cyanuric acid at 50 to 80 ppm and salt, in salt pools, at 2,500 to 3,500 ppm.
Brushing, and when to call
SGM says to brush Diamond Brite with a nylon brush, never a stainless-steel one, which is meant for exposed pebble or bare concrete and marks the finish, and to bring in an installer if etching spreads, dark mottling persists, calcium nodules form or the finish starts to come away from the shell. League City Pool Resurfacing will go through care with you at the estimate.

Quartz pool finish questions
What are pool quartz finishes?
They are exposed-aggregate finishes. CL Industries describes its quartz finish as enriched white Portland cement blended with special quartz aggregates, at about 18 to 22 square feet per 80 lb. bag at 3/8 inch. In the National Plasterers Council's description, hard troweling plus one of several exposure techniques bares the quartz, and the result can be smooth or textured, at an affordable cost.
How long does quartz pool plaster last?
The sources differ, so here are both. The National Plasterers Council rates quartz a 10 to 15 year surface, while SGM designs Diamond Brite for 8 to 12 years and says many pools go longer with consistent maintenance. Either figure assumes balanced water, and SGM's warranty terms ask for monthly water tests documented by a company using a computerized system.
How much does a quartz pool finish cost?
Typical Houston-area prices in 2026 run roughly $6,000 to $8,000 for a quartz blend on the 12,000 to 18,000 gallon pool that is typical in Houston, with size and the shell's condition shifting it from there. National 2026 ranges run wider, $7,000 to $15,000 for quartz aggregate. These are published figures, not prices from League City Pool Resurfacing, and a firm price starts with a free look at the pool.
Can a quartz pool finish be acid washed?
Yes, within limits. By SGM's account its quartz Diamond Brite takes several acid washes over its life with no lasting harm, whereas acid washing traditional limestone-based plaster gave only short-lived relief and wore the plaster away faster. The National Plasterers Council's mildest kind of acid wash uses a low-strength, diluted acid to lift certain stains with little, if any, of the surface compromised. Other quartz lines may differ, so check the maker's guidance for the finish in the pool.
Can you drain a pool with a quartz finish?
Only when it's absolutely necessary, SGM says, and not in the first year: Diamond Brite needs to stay underwater to stay hydrated, sun and air can crack or delaminate it, and an unavoidable drain should be refilled within 24 hours. SGM's warranty also excludes damage from draining the pool. In League City, the drought plan lets the City prohibit draining and refilling from Stage 2 except for structural, maintenance or safety reasons; as of October 4, 2026, none of the official pages read for this site named a stage, so check before draining.
