Pool Crack Repair in League City, TX
League City Pool Resurfacing does pool crack repair in League City, Texas: telling a crack in the plaster from one through the gunite or shotcrete shell or the bond beam, sealing or rebuilding the shell before a new finish goes on, and checking a pool over after a hurricane or flood. The shell, in the National Plasterers Council's description, is formed concrete or shotcrete sprayed wet or dry (the dry mix is gunite) over reinforcing steel, and every interior finish is applied to it.
Estimates are free by phone or through the form. We'll ask where the crack runs, whether it has grown, and whether the pool is losing water.

Pool crack types: finish cracks, shell cracks and bond beam cracks
Cracks in the finish
Not every line in a pool runs through its structure. The National Plasterers Council keeps the name shrinkage crack for one that opens while a finish is being applied or within twenty-four hours after it sets, which is a different thing from a crack in the shell. Plaster that has cracked around a hollow spot, or come loose from the shell, is pool plaster repair.
Cracks through the shell
The American Shotcrete Association sorts shell cracks by cause. Small holes or gaps missed while the shell was shot, and certain shrinkage, autogenous or plastic cracks, can often simply be plugged or patched. A crack from structural movement, or from stress built up inside the structure, calls for an in-depth investigation first, so that the cause and the remedy are both settled before anything is filled.
Bond beam cracks
The bond beam is the top of the pool wall, the part the coping is mortared or poured onto. Unless the deck and the coping are separated by an isolation joint that still works, the deck's movement presses on the pool, which can crack or dislodge the coping and tile and, in extreme cases, crack the bond beam itself, as the failure is commonly described. National cost figures for bond beam repair include replacing the tile and coping that sit on it. A skimmer cracked or pulling away from the pool wall near the top is pool skimmer replacement work.
Fiberglass shells
Fiberglass pools crack differently. Barrier Reef Pools, a fiberglass pool maker, puts spider cracks in the gel coat, not the structure. When a fiberglass pool does crack, the commonest cause it names is how the pool was installed, an uneven base included. No fiberglass maker we read publishes a step-by-step repair for a crack through the laminate itself; the gel coat side of the work is covered under fiberglass pool resurfacing and repair.

Injecting cracks that move or leak
Answering a question about fine shrinkage cracks in a pool's floor, the American Shotcrete Association lists a wide variety of epoxies and polyurethanes for injection, says the smaller the crack, the lower the viscosity the material must have, and wants an engineer or injection specialist who knows shotcrete to evaluate the cracking first. For cracks that will keep moving or stay underwater, it prefers a filler that tolerates movement over a brittle product, which many injectable polyurethane grouts are. Water lost through a crack or a fitting is traced under pool leak detection and repair.
Patching holes before the plaster
For a small hole left in a shotcrete wall, the Association's repair starts with water pressure of 3,000 psi or more to clean off dirt and laitance, the weak film on the surface. The hole is then hand-patched with a nonshrink hydraulic cement rated at 4,000 psi or more at 28 days, and the patch is roughened so the plaster can grip it.
New shotcrete and thicker walls
Where a damaged section is cut out and shot again, new shotcrete meets old under the same rules a remodel follows: a clean, roughened surface kept damp, no bonding agent, and at least 7 days of curing, by the Association's guidance. Making a cracked or thin wall thicker is a different matter. The wall's thickness is part of the pool engineer's design, the Association points out, so a thicker wall would need more reinforcing steel, which the pool's designer has to confirm.
Codes and permits for a shell repair
The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code is League City's pool code, adopted for building, altering, renovating, repairing and maintaining pools. It sends a residential pool's structural design to the International Residential Code, and holds a repair to the requirements for a new system without making the rest of the pool meet the current code. Whether a crack repair needs a League City permit isn't stated on any City page we read, so ask the Building Department before work starts. League City Pool Resurfacing will talk through which repair a crack needs.

What causes pool cracks in League City: clay, fill and heat
Compressible clay under parts of the city
League City sits on the Beaumont Formation, which the USGS state geologic map splits into sandier and clayey areas. The Census Bureau's center point for the city and City Hall fall on sand, while Lloyd R. Ferguson Elementary on Compass Rose Blvd and 2500 South Shore Blvd sit on clay the map calls plastic and compressible, laid down in flood basins, coastal lakes and old stream channels. For most urban uses, the 1988 Galveston County soil survey counts high shrink-swell potential, along with wetness, as a main limit of both Bernard clay loam and Kemah silt loam, and a Houston-area plasterer's FAQ says the region's expansive clay can cause structural cracking that needs repair during a remodel.
Old fill in the town center
At League Park, in the old town center, NRCS maps a Bernard-Urban land complex: 55 percent Bernard soil and 40 percent ground covered by buildings and pavement. It rates that Bernard soil "very limited" for houses without basements, citing flooding, the saturated zone and shrink-swell, and the 1988 survey notes that in this complex the natural soil is in places buried under 6 to 24 inches of fill.
Curing a repair in Gulf Coast heat
New shotcrete is at its most vulnerable while it cures. The American Shotcrete Association warns that skipping curing, and exposing young concrete to wind, heat or dry air, raises the risk of shrinkage and cracking and keeps it from reaching full strength. NOAA's League City station peaked at 107°F on August 27, 2023, the hottest reading in its daily record back to December 1990, and it logged 13 days at 100°F or above in 2011 and 10 in 2023, though most years have none.

Storms on this part of the coast
Hurricane Ike's center came ashore on the north end of Galveston Island on September 13, 2008, and the National Hurricane Center estimated the storm surge on the west side of Galveston Bay at 10 to 15 feet, with the deepest flooding along the coast of mainland Galveston County. Beryl, a Category 1 hurricane, left 4.65 inches of rain at NOAA's League City station on its July 8, 2024 reading.
Checking the pool once the water goes down
The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance's water-quality committee tells owners to assume floodwater has left chemicals, fertilizers, oils, gasoline, sewage, germs, silt and debris in a pool, long after the water recedes, and to keep everyone out of it. Before any clean-up, power to the pool equipment, heaters, outdoor lights and outlets goes off at the main breaker, with a licensed electrician called if the panel is damaged or out of reach. When the water clears enough to see the main drain covers from the deck, check they are attached and intact, and consult a pool professional at once about any damage to the surface, shell, bonding wires or deck.
Draining after a catastrophic flood
After hurricane rainfall or storm surge, the committee says, testing for every contaminant isn't practical, so its advice is to drain the pool, purge the plumbing lines and replace the filter media, subject to its own warning about high groundwater and an empty shell. The refill is fresh potable water, never untreated well water, balanced and sanitized to the ANSI/APSP/ICC-11 ranges before anyone swims.
If the repair has to wait
A flooded pool that can't be repaired right away should be treated as abandoned, in the committee's words: block it off with a temporary safety fence or another approved barrier, and keep debris out with a secured cover that meets ASTM F1346-91, since loose, floating or damaged covers can collapse, hold water and become a drowning hazard. In League City, the barrier statement owners sign with each residential pool permit makes it unlawful to keep a pool that isn't fenced to its rules, and asks that every pool be kept working, with operable filtration and relatively clear water.

(281) 694-4352Questions about pool crack repair
How to tell if a pool crack is structural?
Look at what the crack has done to the shell. The CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code, a code written for public pools, calls a crack structural when the pool surface has broken or split in a way that weakens the vessel's structural integrity. Universal White Cement, a white cement maker, reads the shape: rings or webs of cracks centered on one patch point to the plaster letting go, while a straight crack through the shell is the structural kind. Where spider-web cracking leaves a shell's strength in doubt, the American Shotcrete Association's advice is to have a qualified local engineering firm plan a coring program, take the cores and test them to ASTM C42/C42M or C1604/C1604M.
How much does it cost to repair a crack in a pool?
It depends on where the crack runs and how far. National 2025 figures put small cracks in a gunite or concrete pool at about $75 per linear foot, and a beam crack resurfaced and patched along a pool's full length at around $4,000 to $6,000. One Houston-area pool company's 2025 figures put bond beam crack repair, coping and tile replacement included, at $120 or more per linear foot, with complete structural repairs that can pass $6,500. These are published figures, not prices from League City Pool Resurfacing, and a look at the crack is free.
What is the most effective sealant for repairing pool cracks?
No industry body we read names one product for every crack. Prime Resins, which makes both water-seeking (hydrophilic) and water-repelling (hydrophobic) injection resins, argues for the hydrophilic kind. Its Prime Flex 900 XLV, a low-viscosity resin that is pressure-injected into cracks that are leaking, hairline ones too, foams on contact with water into a watertight, closed-cell seal that flexes as the concrete moves. In the maker's view, hydrophobic resin won't penetrate the tight cracks of wet concrete and can fail a few months after the job. It also picks the product by the leak: a weeping hairline crack takes a low-viscosity resin that penetrates, a gushing one a quick set.
Can gunite pools be repaired?
Yes. Gunite is shotcrete placed as a dry mix, and shotcrete is only a way of placing concrete, so in the American Shotcrete Association's words any method for concrete crack repair applies to it. The faults its technical director hears about most from pool owners and builders trace back to how a shell was shot: reused rebound, too little curing, too little velocity, uneven thickness and excessive porosity. Too little concrete over the steel is another, the Association adds, because water can then reach the reinforcing bar and start corrosion that may spall the concrete off.
What should I do to maintain my pool after heavy rain?
Start with the water level. The Florida Swimming Pool Association, writing for Florida, says a pool that rain has overfilled can be drained back down to its regular level, that draining a pool to clean it calls for professional advice first, and that filtration equipment that has been flooded will need repair. River Pools, a fiberglass pool maker, says equipment that got wet should dry out for at least 24 hours before it is turned back on, and that anything damaged should go to a licensed pool repair company. If floodwater rather than rain got into the pool, treat it as contaminated and keep everyone out until it has been cleaned.
