Pool Skimmer Replacement in League City, TX

League City Pool Resurfacing does pool skimmer replacement and repair in League City, Texas: cracked skimmer bodies, skimmers pulling away from the pool wall, worn weirs and lids, and the ports and lines beneath them. Custom Molded Products, a skimmer maker, lists the parts of a typical in-ground skimmer as the body, a collar and cover at deck level, a weir door, a float valve on some models and a debris basket.

Estimates are free by phone or through the form. It helps to say where the skimmer is cracked, whether the pool loses water near it, and what shape the coping and deck around it are in.

Old cracked skimmer exposed in a cut-open section of pool deck

What a pool skimmer does, and the parts that wear

Skimming the surface

Every permanent inground residential pool and spa needs one of two things under the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code: surface skimming or a perimeter overflow, built to skim whenever the water sits within its operating range. The skimming system has to be sized for the full circulation turnover rate, 100 percent of it.

Weir, float valve and water level

CMP wants the water level kept 2 inches or more above the bottom of the skimmer opening. On its models with a float valve, the valve shuts the skimmer if the water falls below the opening, so the pump doesn't run dry. Where a pool has adjustable-weir skimmers, the code holds the design waterline to within 1/4 inch either way when the work is finished, and to within 1/8 inch where the skimming isn't adjustable, as with gutters.

Collar, cover and deck height

The skimmer's collar and cover sit at deck level. On CMP's skimmer the deck ring collar slides up or down to meet the deck, and extension collars stack on one another where the deck sits higher. The coping around the opening is its own job: cracked or loose coping is pool coping replacement.

Pool skimmer replacement in a concrete pool: what the maker and the code ask

Set in structural concrete

In a concrete pool the skimmer is part of the shell. CMP's manual says a skimmer formed into a concrete shell needs a jacket of structural concrete at least 4 inches thick, placed in one monolithic pour, with tie points at its top for wiring it to the rebar cage. That is the rule for building a pool; no maker or body we read describes taking an old skimmer out of an existing shell, so the method for a replacement is settled on site. League City Pool Resurfacing will talk through what a replacement means for the shell, coping and deck around it.

Ports, plugs and pipe support

Underneath, CMP's skimmer has two 2-inch ports. The back port runs to the pump suction. The front port can be an equalizer line or a connection to the main drain, and if nothing uses it, it gets plugged. Tighten a threaded plug too hard and the plug, or the body itself, may fail, the manual warns, and the pipes need support on undisturbed earth, never lifted or shifted once they are connected to the ports.

Bonding the pool water

The National Electrical Code has required bonding of the pool water itself, not just the metal in the structure, since 2008, CMP explains, and usually the light does it. Where the lights are nicheless LEDs, CMP's water-bonded skimmer does the job with a plate of 9 square inches or more of conductive material that stays wet whether or not the pump runs, connected by copper wire to the pool's bonding grid or loop. Texas licenses electricians, and non-exempt electrical work has to go through a licensed electrical contractor.

  • At least 4 in. of structural concrete around the body (CMP)
  • Water 2 in. above the bottom of the opening (CMP)
  • Bonding plate of 9 sq in. or more (CMP)

Skimmer leaks, shell cracks and public pool rules

Leaks and cracks around the skimmer

A skimmer that leaks shows up as water loss first, so the bucket test and the other checks under pool leak detection and repair come before anything is opened up. Where the shell around the skimmer has cracked, that is pool crack repair. League City's list of work that needs a permit doesn't mention skimmers either way, so ask the City's Building Department whether yours does.

Skimmers at HOA, apartment and hotel pools

In Texas, HOA, apartment and hotel pools count as public pools. At public pools, the CDC's model code (a model, not Texas law) wants the water held near the middle of each skimmer opening and every weir in place and working, and it treats a broken or missing weir as something to replace at once.

Questions about pool skimmers

How much does it cost to replace a pool skimmer?

Typical Houston-area prices in 2026 put skimmer repair at $300 to $600, for a cracked body or a skimmer pulling away from the wall. National 2026 figures put fixing a leak around a skimmer at $100 to $130, and a professional replacement, once a skimmer is too damaged to repair, at $1,200 or more. These are published figures, not prices from League City Pool Resurfacing, and a look at the skimmer costs nothing.

How can I repair my inground pool skimmer?

Begin with the parts made to be swapped. Custom Molded Products' maintenance list is short: check now and then that the weir moves freely, replacing it if it's damaged or worn, and empty the strainer basket as needed. A cracked body is another matter. The maker says to avoid using a cracked or damaged skimmer and not to step on a cracked skimmer plate, and a concrete pool's skimmer body is part of the shell's own concrete.

What are the common problems with pool skimmer baskets?

Breakage and clogging. National 2025 cost figures name broken baskets and covers among the common skimmer repairs. CMP's manual describes its float valve acting when the water drops below the skimmer's opening or when the basket is so clogged that no water can flow through it. The code, for its part, requires a cleanable strainer, skimmer basket or screen ahead of the pump on every pool and spa.

Does a pool need more than one skimmer?

It depends on the size of the water surface. Where skimmers are the only surface skimming system, the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code calls for at least one for every 800 square feet of a residential pool's surface, every 500 square feet of a public pool and every 150 square feet of a spa, placed so the skimming stays effective. CMP's manual sets one skimmer for each 500 square feet and tells installers to check the local building code, since codes vary.

Does an old skimmer equalizer line need to be plugged?

Yes, by the maker's instructions. A DANGER notice in CMP's manual says the equalizer line should be plugged, using NSF-listed PVC cement, and warns that equalizer fittings can trap hair or body parts, with severe injury or death the result. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (2021), which League City adopts, prohibits equalizers on skimmers and wants skimming devices that pose no hazard to swimmers, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission's drain-cover checklist covers the covers on skimmer equalizer lines too.
